Owners of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 take to online forums and communities to discuss an increasingly rampant issue many find with the Ioniq 5: that the battery may die prematurely! What is causing this alleged defect?
Reportedly, some of models of the Ioniq 5 face a potentially severe issue with the vehicle’s 12-volt battery that causes the battery to deplete its charge quickly. This has become an increasing problem with Electric Vehicles, or EVs. While EVs often come with two batteries, the propulsion battery and the 12-volt battery, only the propulsion battery is used to move the vehicle, while the Ioniq 5 and other EVs rely on the 12-volt battery for everything else, including starting the car and powering all of the internal and external devices.
If left unplugged or unattended for extended periods of time, the 12-volt battery could continue to lend power to certain devices or systems like your GPS, dash cams, or other units, even if the vehicle isn’t in use, causing the battery to drain from the 12V. If the battery completely drains, it may be difficult for vehicle owners to start their vehicle or even jump start the vehicle as the 12-volt battery is often responsible for unlocking the vehicle and keeping the hood latch closed; this could make starting your vehicle again time extensive and potentially costly.
Consumers should not have to worry about losing access to their car because they decided to leave their in the garage for more than a few days. This potential issue with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 may put many consumers at risk of their vehicles becoming inoperable. At this time, Ford has neglected to issue a recall on the vehicles. If you own a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and are concerned that your vehicle’s battery health is at risk, fill out our form and join the investigation today!
