Data Breach at Rite Aid

On or around July 15, 2024, Rite Aid, a Pennsylvania-based drug store and pharmacy chain, began notifying individuals that their information was involved in a data breach that allegedly exposed consumers’ personal information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers or other forms of government-issued IDs presented at the time of purchase.

Rite Aid determined that on June 20, 2024, an unauthorized party gained access to confidential consumer information through the company’s servers. Through further investigation, Rite Aid discovered that approximately 2.2 million individuals’ information was impacted and that only consumers who made purchases between June 6, 2017 and July 31, 2018 were impacted.

Rite Aid Class Action Lawsuit and Final Approval of Settlement

On August 6, 2024, Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP filed a class action lawsuit against Rite Aid for the potential impact that the data breach could have or has already had on affected individuals. The court consolidated all actions similarly filed against Rite Aid on August 16 of that year.

The parties reached an agreement to settle the Rite Aid data breach case in early 2025, and following a hearing held in March 2025 on Plaintiffs’ Motion for preliminary approval, the Pennsylvania Court granted preliminary approval of the class action settlement. Impacted individuals were notified in April  2025 about their eligibility to submit a claim pursuant to the settlement.

On July 30, 2025, the Court granted final approval of the $6.8 million settlement. At the Final Approval hearing held on July 17, 2025, the Judge overseeing the case provided the following comment regarding Counsel’s participation in the case:

“I just want to thank counsel for the good job they did in bringing this thing to a resolution…I think everyone did a superb job in bringing it to a close as soon as possible.”
