On June 28, 2024, Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP and its co-counsel filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America, Inc. (“Mazda”) for alleged issues with the Mazda Connect Infotainment systems. The class action suit alleges that the Mazda Connect system does not function as represented.
Due to this alleged defect, the Plaintiffs in the lawsuit claim that many features of the infotainment system such as the navigation system, Bluetooth or hands-free applications, audio system, and safety features like the back up camera can malfunction. Consumers might notice that the infotainment system would reboot frequently and causes the screen to freeze, glitch, or become otherwise irresponsive making the features listed above inoperable. These alleged issues arising from Mazda Connect malfunctions can be distracting to consumers and lead to risks on the road, the lawsuit claims.
On July 2, 2024, Plaintiffs in the Mazda Class Action filed an unopposed motion for preliminary approval of a settlement that had been reached following four mediation sessions spanning a period of two years. On February 17, 2025, the Honorable Judge Benjamin Beaton issued an Order and Opinion granting Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary approval of the settlement and named Benjamin F. Johns of Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP as co-lead Class Counsel.
The settlement automatically grants a warranty extension on the Mazda Connect Infotainment system in the class vehicles. This limited warranty extension will run for a period of two years without regard to mileage. The settlement also provides a process whereby class members who previously incurred out-of-pocket expenses as a result of certain Mazda Infotainment system malfunctions can be reimbursed. Consumers who seek to do so must submit a valid claim by the claims deadline on August 1, 2025. There is no claim filing requirement to receive the benefit of the limited warranty extension.
The Class Vehicles covered by the settlement include:
Mazda2 2016–2022 Mazda3 2014–2018 Mazda6 2016–2021 Mazda CX-3 2016–2021 | Mazda CX-5 2016–2020 Mazda CX-9 2016–2020 and Mazda MX-5 2016–2023 |
The case is captioned Duffy et al v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc., No: 3:24-cv-0388. This case is pending in the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.
