Plaintiffs in the Keenan & Associates data breach case have reached a settlement in the cybersecurity class action. The Court has approved Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary approval of the settlement, allowing impacted consumers to fill out a claim.

In January 2024, Keenan & Associates began notifying individuals that their information had been involved in a data breach that exposed individuals’ personally identifying information (“PII”) and private health information (“PHI”).
Keenan learned that it had experienced a cybersecurity attack in or around August 2023, and conducted an investigation following the cyberattack. Through its investigation, Keenan discovered that an unauthorized party had gained access to the company’s information systems. Through further investigation, Keenan discovered that approximately 1.5 million individuals’ PII and PHI was impacted. Data impacted by the breach includes:
names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, health information, health insurance information, and employment information.

In early February 2024, Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP filed a class action lawsuit against Keenan & Associates for the potential impact that the data breach could have or has already had on affected individuals.
On July 3, 2025, the Superior Court of the State of California for Los Angeles County granted preliminary approval of a $14 million settlement for the affected class. Pursuant to the Court’s Order, Benjamin F. Johns and Samantha E. Holbrook of Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP are among the designated co-lead counsel for the settlement class. Individuals impacted by the breach will be notified and will have the chance to submit a claim through the claims deadline of October 30, 2025 for participation in the class action settlement. The Court has scheduled a final approval hearing for November 14, 2025.
