SRP Federal Credit Union Data Breach Investigation
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating SRP Federal Credit Union for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around November 4, 2024. SRP, known to be one of South Carolina’s largest credit union organizations, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within its information systems. Through further investigation, it was determined that the breach took place between September 5 and November 4, 2024.
Though the bad actor gained access to SRP’s files in early September 2024, the Company did not become aware of the hack until 2 months after the breach. SRP Federal Credit Union has indicated that approximately 240,000 individuals have been impacted by the breach. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include demographic and consumer contact information, financial information, potentially other sensitive information like SSNs.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
