Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (“NIPT”) is a blood testing technology used during pregnancy. While NIPT is known to be reliable when testing for certain common genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, these tests are often unreliable for testing of rarer genetic conditions.
In recent years, companies such as Natera and Sequenom have become increasingly popular manufacturers of the prenatal tests. These companies use language like ‘highly accurate’ and ‘total confidence’ in their online and physical marketing, misleading the average patient and doctor. Due to regulatory loopholes, the FDA does not have to review or clear many of the NIPTs before they are on the market and used for patients.
