Chevrolet (“Chevy”), an American automobile division of General Motors, manufactures and sells a variety of vehicles, including Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV. These are Chevy’s first long-range all-electric cars.
GENERAL MOTORS RECALLED CHEVROLET BOLT EV & EUV DUE TO FIRE RISK
On September 20, 2021, General Motors announced a recall of all Chevy Bolt EVs and EUVs made to date, about 140,000 vehicles total. Specifically, the recalled electric cars contain potential battery cell defects that have caused 13 car fires worldwide. The battery cells have two potential defects: a torn anode tab and a folded separator. When both flaws occur in the same cell, they can cause fires.
In November 2020, General Motors issued a recall of 50,000 Chevy Bolt EVs for this very issue. Nevertheless, Chevy Bolts EVs continued to catch fire, causing property damage and financial loss to consumers. Now General Motors has extended the recall to every Chevy Bolt EV and EUV electric car.
General Motors’ delayed recall is simply unacceptable. The company has put many users at risk of serious injury, property damage, and death. Even with the current recall, Bolt drivers still must wait two months before they can take recalled cars into Chevrolet dealerships to get batteries replaced and add diagnostic software to monitor the new cell. In order to minimize risk, General Motors advises drivers to park Bolt EVs and EUVs 50 feet or an “ample distance” away from other vehicles. This puts the burden on consumers to take safety measures until new hardware and software are available for installation.
