Roku customers who purchased Roku security cameras have been slammed with a difficult choice, purchase a subscription to continue using your purchased device as intended or eat the cost.
Roku removed a significant snapshot feature from its Roku security cameras that allow non-subscribers to the platform’s Roku Smart Home Subscription plan to be able to view a still of motion or sound detection within view of the Camera.
What does this mean? People who purchased the Roku Camera but did not purchase the subscription may now be equipped with device that is worth less than when they purchased it. Does this impact you? Let us know!
Roku Camera subscriptions provide benefits to subscribers. Roku provides access to view motion and sound detected by the camera and sends seconds-long clips of the motion or sound to the subscriber via Roku’s smart home phone app. Non-subscribers were also initially sent alerts for sound or movement, but instead of providing video clips of the detection, the non-subscribers would receive a snapshot of the captured detection… until recently.
Without alerting consumers directly of the change, Roku removed the snapshot feature from all cameras, making cameras that are not subscribed to Roku’s smart home subscription far less useful.
This practice is unfair for consumers who originally purchased the product under the assumption and understanding that a subscription is not needed for the camera to be utilized. Now, however, many feel deceived to have lost out on the utility of the product, and may understandably be peeved that in order to receive those services again these consumers would need to become Roku plan subscribers.
Not only would this add an additional cost to customers than originally intended, but it could mean that without purchasing a subscription plan consumers may lose most of the value of their Roku cameras. Either way, consumers might be losing money whether they subscribe or not.
