Managed Care of North America, Inc. Data Breach Affects 8.9 million Patients
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Managed Care of North America, Inc., doing business as MCNA Insurance Company (“MCNA” or “MCNA Dental”), for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive patient health and financial information in a data breach that was detected on or around May 3, 2023! MCNA, a Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program, discovered in May 2023 that an unauthorized third-party had gained access to the healthcare company’s servers between February 26, 2023 and March 7, 2023. MCNA determined that patient personal and health information was made available. MCNA has alerted the Maine Attorney General’s office that over 8.9 million individuals have been affected by this data breach, making this the biggest US cyber security breach to date. MCNA sent out notices of the data breach to affected patients on May 26, 2023.
According to a notice letter sent out by MCNA, the affected patient information may have included full name, date of birth, address, telephone and email, Social Security number, driver’s license number or government-issued identification number, health insurance information, such as name of plan/insurer/government payor, member/Medicaid/Medicare ID number, plan and/or group number, and (5) information regarding dental/orthodontic care. MCNA has indicated that not all elements were involved for all individuals.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised patient information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
