Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Georgetown University for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around October 17, 2024. Georgetown University, a private higher education institution based in Washington D.C., discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within Ellucian’s information network, Georgetown’s data management system. Through further investigation, it was determined that the breach took place between October 16 and October 17, 2024.
The company discovered the data breach on October 17, 2024 and information about the effects of the data breach is continuously coming to light. Georgetown University has not yet indicated the approximate number of individuals have been impacted by the breach, but the company announced that the information for Georgetown students and applicants from as early as 1990 may have been impacted. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include social security numbers, GPAs, financial aid information, disability and immigration status.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information.
