Discount browser extensions may be diverting commissions for purchases from influencers a part of their affiliate program. Using affiliate links or promo codes may take you to the purchase portal, but an alleged work around may mean that the browser extension keeps the commission for themselves, defrauding their affiliates.

Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP launches an investigation into some browser extension companies offering discounts for consumers straight from the checkout portal – these companies may be duping affiliates by diverting commissions from their affiliate links.
Browser Extensions offering discounts and promo codes for consumers right before checkout have become very prominent within the last decade, with players like Honey by PayPal or Capital One Shopping, as well as others, often offering regularly used codes for its users to try before paying.
In order to promote use of these extensions, the companies often work with influencers and web personalities by providing affiliate links and promo codes that give influencers commissions every time their link is used to complete a purchase.
However, some companies, like Honey and PayPal, have possibly implemented ways to avoid providing any commission to their influencer affiliates. Consumer at checkout may be prompted to pay with PayPal or Apple or Google Pay or other direct payment options. When using PayPal at checkout, Honey allegedly removes the affiliate link originally used to access the product and discount because consumers are checking out through a different portal. Influencers may be losing out on plenty of commissions due to Honey and PayPal’s potentially deceptive business practices, and consumers who think they are supporting their favorite YouTuber, streamer, or web influencer may now feel duped.
Influencers may be losing thousands of commissions because of this tactic by discount browser extension companies. If you are an influencer with an affiliate link to any browser extension discounter and notice that your commission rate has potentially been impacted or are concerned that your affiliate program may be withholding commissions, let us know!
