Cencora Inc. Data Breach Potentially Impacts Individuals’ Personal Information

(“Cencora”) for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around February 21, 2024. Cencora is a Pennsylvania-based drug wholesale company and research organization that used to operate as AmerisourceBergen. The company announced via an SEC filing that the company’s information systems were breached after Cencora discovered that an unauthorized party had gained access to its private consumer information. Cencora’s investigation is ongoing.

Cencora has not indicated the approximate number of individuals that have been impacted by the breach. It is unclear what information has been impacted – Cencora has indicated that its operations and information systems continue to be operational, but it is unsure if the financial systems were materially impacted. Consumer information exposed in breaches may vary but can include name, Social Security number, mailing address, date of birth, demographic and contact information, financial information, or medical information.

The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
