CalPERS Data Breach Impacts Private Information of 769K Individuals
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating California Public Employees Retirement System (“CalPERS”) for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer and employee information in a data breach that was detected on or around June 6, 2023. CalPERS, a California-based public pension fund provider, discovered that cybersecurity breach impacted third-party systems that contained CalPERS consumer information, including employees of CalPERS and clients’ family members.
CalPERS publicly notified its customers of the breach on June 21, 2023 via a notice on their website, and it prepares to send notice letters to affected individuals. CalPERS has indicated that approximately 769,000 individuals have been impacted by the breach. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include first and last name; date of birth; and social security number.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information.
