Ascension Seton Data Breach possibly Exposes Texas Residents to Fraud

a bad agent takes data from a computer system.

Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Ascension Seton for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach that was detected on or around earlier this year. Ascension Seton (“Ascension”), a Texas-based healthcare organization and hospital system, discovered that an unknown actor had possibly gained access to sensitive information found on two of their websites, seton.net and dellchildrens.net, resulting in a data breach. According to Ascension the data security breach lasted from March 1 through March 2, and impacted an undisclosed amount of individuals.

This information affected by the data breach may have included consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, addresses, contact information, credit card numbers, and insurance information. Information submitted through either seton.net or dellchildrens.net may be at risk. Though the data breach occurred in early March 2023, Ascension did not alert the public or individuals affected until June 6, 2023.

The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised patient information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
