Lansing Community College – Court grants Final Approval to $1.45M Settlement in Class Action

Lansing Community College Data Breach

Lansing Community College (“Lansing” or “LCC”), a Michigan-based institution of higher education and one of the largest community colleges in the state, experienced a cyber security incident that compromised LCC’s information networks between December 22, 2022, and March 15, 2023.

The incident potentially impacted sensitive information including full name and Social Security Number of staff, and current and former students.  The data breach affected approximately 757,832 individuals, potentially putting them at risk of fraud or suspicious activity and misuse of their Private Information. Consumers impacted by the breach would have received notice of the breach and the information impacted on or around June 30, 2023.

Shub Johns & Holbrook attorneys filed a class action lawsuit against the Lansing on July 11, 2023 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan.  On September 15, 2023, Plaintiffs in the case filed a Consolidated Amended Complaint following the Court’s order consolidating all actions against Lansing related to the data breach. In the Court’s consolidation order, the Judge also appointed Shub Johns & Holbrook’s attorney, Benjamin F. Johns, as Co-Lead Class Counsel.

Final Approval of the LCC Settlement

Parties in the case engaged in arm’s length negotiations following the consolidation of the case, and reached a $1.45 million settlement. On August 30, 2024, The Western Michigan District Court granted Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary approval of a $1.45 million class action settlement in the consolidated Lansing data breach litigation. Class members and impacted consumers were provided notice and given until January 20, 2025 to submit a claim seeking compensation or recourse from effects caused by the data breach.

SJ&H Partners, Samantha Holbrook and Benjamin F. Johns, attended the settlement’s final approval hearing held by the Court on January 21, 2025 in Michigan before the Honorable Judge Paul L. Maloney. Following the Court’s hearing on final approval of the class action settlement, the Court issued an order granting final approval to the $1.45M settlement. Class members who submitted a valid claim for compensation can expect to receive their portion of the settlement fund in the months following the Court’s order.

The case is In Re Lansing Community College Data Breach Litigation, No. 1:23-cv-0738.
