The Louisiana court presiding over a class action suit against Southwest Louisiana Hospital Association d/b/a Lake Charles Memorial Health System (“Lake Charles Memorial”) for a data breach impacting patients’ personal identifiable and private health information recently granted final approval to a $2 million class action settlement.
The case is captioned Salinas v. Southwest Louisiana Hospital Ass’n, Index No. 20213-0090D. The deadline to submit claims pursuant to the settlement has expired. Class members who have submitted claims may be able to anticipate payments in early 2026.

Data Breach at Lake Charles Memorial
Lake Charles Memorial notified impacted patients in late December 2022 of a cybersecurity incident that was discovered on October 21, 2022 and conducted an investigation following the cybersecurity attack.
Through its investigation, Lake Charles discovered that an unauthorized party had gained access to the company’s information systems. Through further investigation, Lake Charles discovered that over 270K individuals’ PII and PHI may have been impacted. Data impacted by the breach includes:
- full name
- date of birth
- address
- Social Security numbers
- Medical record or patient identification numbers
- Health insurance information
- Payment information
- Clinical information
Lake Charles Memorial Class Action Lawsuit and Final Approval of Settlement
In January 2023, Shub Johns & Holbrook LLP filed a class action lawsuit against Lake Charles for the potential impact that the data breach could have or has already had on affected individuals. The Court consolidated all class cases against the Lake Charles data breach on August 21, 2023, and appointed Shub Johns & Holbrook partner Benjamin F. Johns as Interim co-lead counsel for the Plaintiffs.
The parties reached an agreement to settle the Lake Charles data breach case in May 2025, with the Louisiana Court granting preliminary approval of the class action settlement. Impacted individuals were notified in June 2025 about their eligibility to submit a claim pursuant to the settlement.
On November 3, 2025, final approval of the $2 million settlement was granted following the Court’s Final Approval hearing on the matter. The judge entered their final approval order later that day.
The deadline to submit claims pursuant to the settlement has expired. Class members who have submitted claims may be able to anticipate payments in early 2026.
