MOWI DUCKTRAP SALMON NOT “ALL NATURAL” AS CLAIMED?
It has been alleged that the “All Natural” claims on packages of Ducktrap River of Maine smoked Atlantic salmon products are misleading. It is further alleged that the Ducktrap salmon is raised in a crowded pen where it is treated with artificial chemicals, including pesticides and medically important antibiotics. So Ducktrap salmon is far from “all-natural” as the company advertises.
IS MOWI DUCKTRAP SALMON REALLY MADE IN THE USA?
Additionally, Ducktrap advertises that its salmon is “Made in USA.” But the products, which are sold at Walmart, are actually sourced from industrial farms that are not located in the USA. Ducktrap River of Maine has operations in Maine, but those operations are limited exclusively to smoking. The Atlantic salmon Ducktrap imports for its smoking operations is sourced from Mowi’s farms in Scotland, Norway, Iceland, and Chile.
Ducktrap River of Maine is owned by Norway-based, Mowi, the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon products, including smoked Atlantic salmon products. Recently, Mowi has made headlines, according to this report in Salmon Business, for allowing 1.5 million juvenile salmon to die in Mowi’s hatchery in Northern Norway as a result of acute sulfur poisoning. This news followed a late 2019 report that 74,000 salmon escaped from one of Mowi’s industrial farms in Scotland, posing a threat to the area’s wild fish stocks.
Mowi also falsely claims that its Ducktrap River of Maine salmon is “100% natural” or produced “all naturally with no artificial ingredients or preservatives.” But salmon that is produced with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs are far from “all-natural” as Mowi claims.
