MOVEit Software Data Breach Exposes Consumers to Potential Fraud — Shub & Johns Investigates

Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating MOVEit for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach that was detected on or around May 31, 2023. MOVEit is a file transfer software used by government agencies and hospitals. MOVEit is part of the larger Progress Software Corporation which is based in Burlington, Massachusetts. MOVEit discovered that the stolen data includes payroll information such as home addresses, National Insurance numbers, and bank details. It is reported that medical records, bank records, social security numbers, and addresses are at risk as well. According to MOVEit, the data security breach lasted from early June of 2023 to an undetermined time, and impacted millions of people. The exact impact is still being measured.

The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised patient/customer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
