Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Data Breach Impacts patients
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (“Fred Hutch”) for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach that was detected on or around on or around November 19, 2023. Fred Hutch, a Seattle-based cancer research institute and cancer program at UW Medicine, discovered unauthorized activity on limited parts of its clinical network, possibly allowing an unknown party access to sensitive information. Although the breach was detected on November 19, 2023, it unclear how long Fred Hutch’s systems were breached for or how many individuals were impacted.
Fred Hutch claims to have an ongoing investigation into affected data. Information typically affected by data breach can included patients’ names, Social Security numbers, addresses, contact information, financial information, insurance information, and other sensitive health information.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised patient information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
