SHUB LAW FIRM INVESTIGATES EXCESSIVE NOTARY FEES

Shub Law is investigating claims that some consumers are being illegally overcharged for notary services. Many people have used notary services in their lifetime. But it’s possible that some notaries public are charging more than the legal limits that most states have set on notary services.

WHAT ARE NOTARY SERVICES?

Notary services include validating a person’s signature, administering oaths and affirmations, taking affidavits and statutory declarations, among other functions. ‘Acknowledgements’ are the most common and involve the signer verifying their identity to the notary and signing the document. You may have had a mortgage agreement, contract, or other official document notarized in the past. Depending on the service, fees can vary.

AM I BEING OVERCHARGED FOR NOTARY SERVICES?

If you have used a notary service, check the below chart from the National Notary Association to see if you were overcharged your state’s limit:

Some consumers are reporting being overcharged the notary fee limit by state law. For example, Illinois state law sets the maximum fee for notary services is $1.00. However, an IL UPS Store location has been found to charge a flat fee of $5.00 per document notarized, violating Illinois state law.
