TIPS TO AVOID BLACK FRIDAY ONLINE SHOPPING SCAMS

We’ve entered the holiday shopping season, and due to COVID-19 restrictions, more and more consumers are flooding the online market. Unfortunately, so are scammers. Follow these tips to ensure your online safety as you shop for those Black Friday deals.

MAKE SURE YOUR VIRUS PROTECTION IS UP TO DATE

The first rule of doing anything online is ensuring your computer is protected against malicious software. Most computers nowadays come with built-in virus protection, but it is always important to double-check. Hackers can gather your information and compromise your computer just from you clicking on an unknown website.

MAKE SURE THE WEBSITE IS REPUTABLE

Always proceed with caution if you have not heard of the website. Independent sellers exist, but you should always research the company before giving any of your personal information. Look up past reviews and check for a customer service number. Verify that all information on the website is spelled correctly; if not, this may be a tip that the website is not to be trusted. If there is a deal that is way too good to be true, be skeptical and proceed with caution.

ALWAYS SHOP WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD

Credit cards come with protections in the event of being scammed. This includes the ability to contest a purchase. Unfortunately, most debit cards don’t include this protection. In the unfortunate event you are scammed, you at least have a better chance of gaining back your money.

STAY SAFE

Online shopping has become more than just a pleasure, but a necessity during our current events. Use these tips to secure yourself and your hard-earned money as you search for the best deals.
