Shub Law is investigating a recent data breach involving the hotel reservation software, Prestige Software, used by Expedia and booking.com. The hotel management system, which uses a “cloud environment,” has been allegedly improperly storing personal information from consumers since 2013.
OVER 10 MILLION PERSONAL FILES AFFECTED IN DATA BREACH
Prestige Software prides itself on its “comprehensive system to manage individual or hotel chains,” yet the company allegedly stored data from its Cloud Hospitality system on a “misconfigured Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 bucket.” Doing so resulted in millions of logs from consumers dating back to 2013 to be unsafely stored.
The personal information from consumers includes credit card and CVV numbers, full names, addresses, and ID numbers of guests, and comprehensive details about customers’ reservations. Left vulnerable to attack, this personal information allows cybercriminals to launch phishing attacks or commit fraud or identity theft. Leaving consumer’s private information unprotected, Prestige Software violated the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, which was created to protect consumers online.
OTHER HOTEL RESERVATION COMPANIES AFFECTED
Expedia and booking.com, both hotel and travel companies used to reserve hotel stays, are notable in this attack, but other companies use the Cloud Hospitality system from Prestige Software. Those companies are Agoda, Amadeus, Hotels.com, Hotelbeds, Omnibees, and Sabre. If you have used any of these hotel reservation companies since 2013, your information may be at risk!
