We’re entering the season of giving, and while it is important to give when you can, many scam artists are out to take advantage of your generosity.
It is important that you protect yourself when searching for the right charity to give to. Make sure to follow these steps when donating.
RESEARCH THE CHARITY EXTENSIVELY
You should know about the charity before you give them anything. Learn about their background and who they serve. Verify their name to assure they are who they say. When speaking to a solicitor or volunteer, ask for identification to make sure they belong to the charity. Anyone honest will happily oblige.
In the same vein, make sure you understand where your donation is going. Some organizations run professional fundraisers, which means not all of the money they receive will go to their cause.
BE WARY OF TELEPHONE AND MAIL SOLICITATIONS
Scam artists will often attempt to pressure and confuse you over the phone or through the mail. Sometimes they will rely on emotional stories to manipulate you. Or, they will include free, small gifts in the mail and ask for money in return. Do not be confused by this tactic, as federal law states you do not need to contribute money if you were given something without asking.
Any respectable organization will not expect you to commit any money immediately through the phone or mail. As always, it is best practice to never give out your credit card information over the phone and to ignore harassing letters. When you do give, make sure to keep track of your donations.
PROTECTING YOURSELF UNDER CONSUMER LAWS
Giving when you can is important, as this year more than ever families are in need. It is unfortunate that scam artists will take advantage of people’s generosity, which is why it is important to protect yourself. Any respectable charitable organization will happily give any information about their history and their cause in order to ease your concerns. All you have to do is ask.
