COIVD-19 has resulted in a significant drop in airplane passengers, forcing many airlines to cancel flights. On Sept. 1, the Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser wrote a letter to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) that urged the federal agency to investigate Frontier Airlines for denying customers’ claims to ticket refunds and flight vouchers.

Weiser reported that his office received more than 100 complaints from consumers regarding Frontier’s deceptive flight change policies and unfair customer service practices; moreover, the Attorney General claims that his office received more complaints about Frontier’s conduct than any other company during the pandemic.
According to the regulations set forth by the USDOT, airlines are required to refund customers’ tickets when the flight is canceled or goes through significant schedule changes, even when flight changes are caused by circumstances outside of the airline’s control, like COVID-19. Additionally, many passengers have voluntarily canceled their flights considering the current pandemic. Frontier’s policy on passenger cancelations essentially provides customers with 90 days before their airline credit expires. However, customers have complained that Frontier has denied customers the ability to use their vouchers, to redeem the full value of their flight credit, or to get any compensation at all. Customers also report that the calls they made to the airline have been unreasonably unhelpful in sorting out any of these issues.
