What was once an unknown ceremonial plant used in Eastern Asia, Kratom has exploded in the United States with as many as five million users according to AKA (American Kratom Association). Sellers of Kratom claim the plant can help with pain and addiction as well as enhance performance, but these claims are unsubstantiated.
DOES KRATOM HAVE HEALTH BENEFITS?
Unfortunately, no. There is no evidence that Kratom helps with pain, addiction, or performance. However, there are a substantial number of claims suggesting the plant can cause serious harm. In one case, a newborn infant of an addicted Kratom user was sent to the NICU for withdrawal treatment. Other users have experienced liver damage, muscle pain, breathing suppression, and in some cases death.
The Mayo Clinic has warned consumers and the FDA has issued multiple warnings to companies that sell Kratom, but users and vendors are still on the rise.
DECEIVING PEOPLE IN PAIN
While some people use Kratom as a party drug, many users turn to Kratom because they are suffering due to pain, depression, or addiction. Companies know this and exploit this by falsely claiming Kratom is a natural remedy capable of healing their ails. Here are some claims companies are currently making:
- “In fact, many people use Kratom to overcome addiction.”
- “Usage: It is for the management of chronic pain…”
- “Some researchers have even claimed that Kratom can protect you against cancer!”
All of these claims are made without scientific backing, and with complete disregard to the health and safety of American consumers.
LET’S FIGHT BACK AGAINST COMPANIES SELLING KRATOM
Kratom is an unregulated dangerous substance, and very little is known about its long-term effects. Unregulated by the FDA, Kratom is damaging a nation still dealing with an opioid epidemic. Over 1,800 calls were made to US Poison Control Centers from 2011 – 2017, and around 65% of these calls were made from 2016 – 2017.
