Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating McLaren’s Health Care for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected in late September 2023. McLaren Health, a Michigan-based healthcare system that operated 14 hospitals throughout the state, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within McLaren’s systems after noticing suspicious activity.

On September 29, 2023, a ransomware group known as BlackCat reportedly announced on their dark web site that they had successfully stolen over 6 terabytes of data from McLaren; the group, however, did not indicate for how long the breach occurred or what information was stolen. McLaren has indicated that approximately 2.5 million individuals have been impacted by the breach. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary, but at this moment McLaren has not indicated what information may have been impacted.

The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
