Shub Law is investigating an emergent environmental disaster caused by an oil spill from the Elly rig, an oil rig off the coast of Huntingdon Beach, California. Severe harm in personal property, real estate value, and harm to animals and personal health is likely to occur. The rig owners have breached their responsibility regarding their production of oil and the community and ecosystem at large. At Shub Law, we don’t take these injustices sitting down. You have options.
What is the “Elly” oil rig?
The “Elly” is an oil rig off the coast of California, between Huntingdon Beach and Newport Beach. Amplify Energy Corporation owns the rig, and they also own the energy company who manages the rig, Beta Operating Company, LLC (“Beta Offshore”). Additionally, the rig was constructed over forty years ago, and includes an 18 mile oil pipline managed by Amplify for the last nine years.
Was there an oil spill?
On October 2, 2021, the United States Coast Guard became aware of an oil spill in the area offshore of Huntingdon Beach and Newport Beach, CA. In all, at least 126,000 gallons of crude oil washed into the affected area at the time of this writing. This spill affects over 8,000 acres of the Pacific Ocean and is tarnishing a 25-acre ecological reserve, the Talbert Marsh.
Oil spills devastate communities, economies, and wildlife. Past examples include the Exxon Valdez spill of the 1980s and the Deepwater Horizon spill of the early 2010s, and this one is no different. Residents of Orange County, CA are already advised to seek medical attention, and marine animals will likely be impaired by oil ingestion. Not to mention, the beaches in Orange County could close for “a few months,” according to the Huntingdon Beach mayor. All this to say this careless oil spill is profoundly damaging – and getting worse.
