SHUB LAW INVESTIGATES HARLEY-DAVIDSON FOR RECALLED LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLES

Shub Law is investigating Harley-Davidson for a recent recall on its electric motorcycle line. The recall states that the LiveWire electric motorcycle may experience a sudden loss in power, which is dangerous to the riders.

Released in 2019, LiveWire is Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle. Harley-Davidson’s motorcycle reputation is well known, but electric-powered vehicles are a whole new territory.

POWER LOSS ISSUE IN LIVEWIRE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

Harley-Davidson sent out a recall notice on October 19, 2020 for all LiveWire motorcycles produced between September 23, 2019 and March 16, 2020. The recall notice states, “The electric vehicle powertrain may unexpectedly shut down and not restart, due to a software issue in the Onboard Charging (OBC) system.” Clearly, this becomes a serious issue for riders not expecting their vehicle to suddenly stop. It is estimated that 1% of the LiveWire motorcycles are affected by the power default, but that is 1% too many.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S INSUFFICIENT RESPONSE

Harley-Davidson is notifying owners whose LiveWire motorcycles are included in the recall. The company is offering to update the OBC software for free to amend the power issue, but is that enough for those riding unsafely for months?

This isn’t the first time the LiveWire line experienced a manufacturing issue. Harley-Davidson had to stop production on the LiveWire vehicles in late 2019 after an anomaly occurred, but resumed production not long after. Despite the halt to production, Harley-Davidson assured riders to continue using their LiveWire vehicles. Was that the safest decision?
