Blackbaud is the third-party software vendor used by Inova Health System. Inova Health System is one of the many health systems affected by a ransomware attack at a third-party software vendor. Blackbaud’s cyber-attacks occurred between Feb. 7, 2020, and May 20, 2020. Blackbaud claims it learned of the data breach in May, and Inova claims it learned of the data breach in July.

It has been reported that Blackbaud paid a ransom to the hackers to ensure that the perpetrators would destroy any backup files of the stolen information, but that information might still be out there. This data security incident may have affected up to about one million Inova patients and donors. Inova’s investigation concluded that the information mined during the data breach may have contained personal information such as “full names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, provider name(s), date(s) of service, hospital department(s), and/or philanthropic giving history such as donation dates and amounts.” Inova advised its patients and donors to stay vigilant and watch for any fraudulent activity on their bank accounts.
