AmazonBasics is a private label launched in 2009 by Amazon. Throughout the past decade or so, the AmazonBasics brand has grown its line of products considerably. AmazonBasics now offers anything from towels to electronics. However, as AmazonBasics has grown its products, consumer complaints regarding AmazonBasics’ products have grown as well.
ARE AMAZONBASICS SURGE PROTECTORS SAFE?
Since 2016, there have been over 1,500 consumer complaints regarding the safety of over 70 different AmazonBasics products. One of the more recent safety hazards involves the AmazonBasics surge protector. There have been about 2,600 customer reviews complaining that the surge protector malfunctioned, melted, or, in some instances, even caught fire. While user error, a house’s faulty wiring, and defective plug-in products might explain the surge protector’s explosive tendencies, electronics sold under the AmazonBasics brand should rarely pose such dangers. Dozens of customers have complained that the surge protector caught fire and caused damage to their other belongings. One customer who bought AmazonBasics’ surge protector in 2018 compared it to a “blowtorch,” and the only thing that was plugged into the surge protector was one phone charger that wasn’t even in use. In response to these claims, AmazonBasics recently reported that the surge protector was a safe product. However, AmazonBasics has stopped selling its surge protectors since.
