Oregon Hospital Patients Potentially Exposed to HIV and Hepatitis
Shub & Johns LLC launches investigation into claims and reports that patients of two Portland, Oregon based hospitals have potentially been exposed to HIV and Hepatitis B and C due to an infection control breach within the facilities.
Approximately 2,400 patients of Providence and Legacy Health, health care providers in the state, have been potentially exposed to HIV and two different forms of hepatitis and are being encouraged by the healthcare providers to obtain blood tests out of caution for their health and safety.
The exposures were a result of an error or oversight of an anesthesiologist, who was working for Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center. The anesthesiologist was also employed by a third-party contractor, the Oregon Anesthesiology Group. The anesthesiologist is no longer employed by either facility or organization, and the physician has been suspended from practice.
2 patients at Providence Portland Medical Center and another 2,200 patients with a sister-facility, Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center, have been contacted and notified of their potential exposure to the viruses. Likewise, 211 patients previously treated at Legacy Mount Hood were notified or are in the process of being notified of their potential exposure and infection.
Statements issued by the health organizations indicated that the risk of infection is low, and that new protocols and procedures will be put in place, but consumers and patients visit a health facility or hospital to be treated for infections not to be given new ones.
