Texas Tech Data Breach Impacted 1.4 million Consumers’ Data
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Texas Tech University for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around September 29. Texas Tech, a Texas-based university with its main campus in Lubbock and satellite site in El Paso, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within Texas Tech’s Health Science Center. Through further investigation, it was determined that the breach took place between September 17 and September 29, 2024.
Texas Tech has indicated that approximately 1.4 million individuals have been impacted by the breach, including the private health and personal identifiable information of 815K consumers from the El Paso site and 650K consumers from the Lubbock site. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers/government-issued identification numbers, financial account information, health insurance information, diagnosis and treatment information, medical records numbers, and billing/claims data.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
