SAG-AFTRA Data Breach Investigation
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan (“SAG-AFTRA”) for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer and patient information in a data breach that was detected on or around September 18, 2024. SAG-AFTRA, a California-based health plan organizer that provides health benefits to thousands of media professionals, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within SAG-AFTRA’s systems following an employee’s email account was compromised. Through further investigation, it was determined that the breach took place between September 17 and September 18.
SAG-AFTRA completed an investigation into the data breach and compromised files and identified that the compromised email included sensitive client and consumer information, leading SAG-AFTRA to deliver notices to impacted on December 2, 2024. SAG-AFTRA has not been able to indicate the approximate number of individuals that have been impacted by the breach. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include your name, Social Security number and health insurance information, and potentially more.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
