PIH Health Data Breach Impacts 17.1 Million Patients Private Info
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating PIH Health for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around December 1, 2024.PIH Health, a Southern California health organization and hospital system, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within PIH’s record systems. Through further investigation, it was determined that the breach took place on December 1, 2024.
The breach was discovered after a ransom note was faxed to Southern California News Group indicating that the hackers exfiltrated the private information of 17 million consumers. Given the recency of the data breach, PIH Health has not been able to indicate the approximate number of individuals that have been impacted by the breach. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include demographic and contact information, health and insurance information, financial information, and other private information such as SSN. The hackers have also claimed to have obtained employee information such as confidential agreements and nondisclosure agreements.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
