Peterson Holding Company Data Breach Investigation
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Peterson Holding Company (“Peterson”) for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around June 28, 2023. Peterson, a California construction operations company and parent company to its subsidiaries like Peterson Cat, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within Peterson’s systems. The company conducted an almost year long investigation, which concluded on May 8, 2024, in which Peterson determined that the breach took place between June 27 and June 28, 2023.
Though the data security breach was discovered in June of 2023, the Company did not announce the data breach until after it concluded its investigation in May 2024, and did not send notice to impacted individuals until August 1, 2024. Peterson has not indicated that approximately 8,020 individuals have been impacted by the breach, but there may be more. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include individuals’ names, date of birth, driver’s license number, US military or other federal issued ID number, Passport number, medical information, financial account information and Social Security number.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
