Dick’s Sporting Goods Data Breach Investigation
Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating Dick’s Sporting Goods (“DSG”) for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around August 21, 2024. Dick’s Sporting Goods, a activewear retailer based in Pennsylvania, discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to client data within DSG’s systems. Dick’s Sporting Goods has engaged in an internal investigation, but has not reported on when the data breach initially occurred.
Though the data security breach was discovered in August of 2024, DSG has not identified or confirmed what information has been impacted, nor who or how many consumers have been impacted. It is also unclear if only consumer information was affected by the breach or if employee information could have also been a part of the data breach.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
