American Water Cybersecurity Data Breach Investigation

hacker sitting at desk in low light.Shub & Johns LLC is currently investigating American Water for an apparent failure to safeguard sensitive consumer information in a data breach that was detected on or around October 3, 2024. American Water, a New Jersey based water utility company, discovered that the company’s data systems and computer networks were impacted by a cybersecurity incident that may have impacted information within those systems. Through further investigation, it was determined that the breach took place on October 3, 2024 but it is not yet determined if the computer networks had been breached prior.

There is very limited information on the data breach as of yet, but American Water indicates that it has engaged a third-party cybersecurity professionals to investigate the effects of the data breach. American Water has not yet indicated the number of individuals that have been impacted by the breach. American Water continues to investigate the incident and will provide more information as appropriate. Consumer information exposed in the breach may vary but can include demographic information, financial information, and/or other potentially sensitive information.

The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised consumer information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
