Airline Junk Fees Deceiving Consumers
Airlines are making billions of dollars from so-called “junk fees” that are charged to consumers. Junk fees which are typically fees that are not revealed to consumers before checking out and can include unexpected charges for everything from seat selection to luggage handling. As mentioned, these fees are often not disclosed upfront, leaving passengers frustrated and confused as to why they are being charged more than anticipated.
Airline companies like Frontier, Spirit, American, Delta and others have reportedly made billions by tacking on additional fees for consumers who want extra leg room or a window seat, and they may even make these features a la carte so even though consumers could pick and choose what they want to prioritize, it seemingly comes at a cost.
Some reports indicate that airline workers are being incentives with bonuses or extra cash wages to tag on these extra junk fees while flyers are boarding by identifying consumers who may have tried to skirt the carry-on bag fees. These companies are not only unjustly enriching themselves by placing these extra fees on unassuming consumers, but also create an environment where employees are paid more to charge these junk fees on potentially innocent customers.
