Parties in Lansing Community College Data Breach Class Action reach $1.45 Million Settlement
Lansing Community College Data Breach
Lansing Community College (“Lansing” or “LCC”), a Michigan-based institution of higher education and one of the largest community colleges in the state, experienced a cyber security incident that compromised LCC’s network between December 22, 2022, and March 15, 2023. The incident potentially impacted sensitive information including full name and Social Security Number. The data breach affected approximately 757,832 individuals, potentially putting them at risk of fraud or suspicious activity and misuse of their Private Information. Though the company experienced the breach in March of 2023, it did not begin informing impacted consumers until June 30, 2023.
Shub & Johns attorney filed a class action lawsuit against Lansing on July 11, 2023 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. On September 15, 2023, Shub & Johns, along with co-counsel the Milberg Law Firm, filed a Consolidated Amended Complaint after the Pennsylvania Court granted the Plaintiff’s motion to consolidate all actions against Lansing concerning the data breach. Shub & Johns Partner, Benjamin F. Johns, was also appointed as Interim Co-Lead Counsel alongside the Milberg firm.
Preliminary Approval of the LCC Settlement
Following the consolidated amended complaint, Benjamin F. Johns, and other Plaintiffs’ attorneys, engaged in arm’s length negotiations with counsel for the LCC, reaching a tentative resolution to settle this matter on a class wide basis for $1.45 million.
On June 19, 2024, Shub & Johns filed an unopposed motion for preliminary approval of a class action settlement. Plaintiff’s unopposed motion for preliminary approval of settlement is currently pending before the court of Honorable District Judge Paul L. Maloney.
If the settlement is preliminarily granted, impacted individuals will have the chance to submit a claim. Details regarding the Proposed Settlement are still to come.
