Court grants Final Approval of $4 million Settlement in Connexin Software Data Breach Case
Connexin Software Data Breach
Connexin Software, Inc. d/b/a Office Practicum, a Pennsylvania- based electronic medical records vendor, experienced a cybersecurity incident that compromised Connexin’s network in or around August 2022. Connexin, however, did not announce the data breach until November 2022, possibly leaving many individuals at risk of fraud without knowing the potential cause. The incident impacted sensitive information including patient demographic information like names, dates of birth, and contact information, as well as health insurance information, Social Security numbers, medical and treatment information, and billing and claims information. The data breach exposed approximately 2.2 million individuals, many of them pediatric patients.
Shub & Johns attorney, Benjamin F. Johns, filed a class action lawsuit against Connexin Software on December 14, 2022 in the United States Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. On April 28, 2023, Shub & Johns, along with co-counsel, filed a Consolidated Amended Complaint after the Pennsylvania Court granted the Plaintiffs’ motion to consolidate all actions against Connexin Software concerning the data breach.
Final Approval of the Connexin Settlement
After conducting significant discovery and engaging in arm’s length negotiations through formal mediation, a tentative settlement was reached between Plaintiffs’ counsel and Connexin.
On February 14, 2024, The Pennsylvania Court granted preliminary approval for a $4 million class action settlement in the consolidated Connexin Software Data Breach litigation and appointed Shub & Johns attorney, Benjamin F. Johns, as Settlement Co-Class Counsel. Impacted Consumers were notified and given the opportunity to submit a claim through July 25, 2024.
On July 24, 2024 the Honorable Judge Joshua D. Wolson granted final approval of the settlement from the bench. Shub & Johns attorneys, Benjamin F. Johns, Samantha Holbrook, and Andrea Bonner attended the hearing. Shub & Johns is pleased to have served as a lead counsel in this important case.
